Talkies commentator talks Super Bowl advertising

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Now that the Super Bowl is over, some of us are proud that the Steelers’ won, others are still pouting because the Cardinal’s lost and many are wondering what happened to good advertising? This lingering question was exactly what was on my mind at the end of the 4th quarter on Sunday. Because Talk hosted an event dedicated entirely to Super Bowl advertising, I had spent countless hours researching participating companies, searching for leaked commercials and finding the latest buzz on everything related to Super Bowl ads. The pre-Super Bowl attitude was positive, so I was looking forward to creative executions, side-splitting humor and, of course, famous faces.

As the first quarter passed and then halftime, I realized that my hope for true advertising entertainment was dwindling. Sure, the Clydesdales were cute, and the Bridgestone Potato Head couple made me giggle, but there wasn’t a single ad that made me excited or kept me laughing beyond the :30 spot. I’m not sure if advertisers were trying to play it safe or the usual creative brilliance was lacking, but I can only hope things get better for next year!

Introducing your game-day commentator

Friday, January 30th, 2009

super-bowl-logo9Hello world, my name is Holly and on the day of the Super Bowl I will be the go-to girl for all your commercial commentary. During the Super Bowl Talkies Awards, I’ll be spending my time on SuperBowlTalkies.com with all of you chatting about the best and worst of Super Bowl commercials. As the youngest and newest member of the Talk team, I’m excited to play such a crucial role in this year’s Talkies. Personally, I’m a huge fan of dumb humor seen in many Anheuser-Busch commercials, particularly the Will Ferrell spot from last year, but I’m also a sucker for pet ads like first-time Super Bowl advertiser Pedigree. Overall, I’m just a huge ad-dork, and I truly enjoy watching commercials.

Critiquing 67 ads is a tough job but someone has to do it, and I sure don’t want to do it alone. Join our Talkies live chat on SuperBowlTalkies.com on Sunday any time after 5 p.m. and let me know what you’re thinking.

Coke bubbles over with creativity

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Pepsi may have locked Coke out of the first half talkiesrgbsmof the game, but Coke isn’t letting that stand in their way. “Heist” is :60 of beautifully crafted and choreographed CGI. The colors and the choice of “Peter and the Wolf” music makes this minute-long spot a whimsical  departure from the rest of the commercial pack.

What else can $3 million buy?

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Miller High Life is taking a tongue-in-cheek approach to Super Bowl advertising this year. talkiesrgbsmInstead of shelling out $3 million big ones for a :30 spot, they are putting all of their efforts into promoting a :01 (yes one second) spot. On 1secondad.com, they give a slew of one-second wonders as well as a list of what you could buy with $3 million other than one game day ad. A few of my favorites are 3 40′ semi trailers full of butter, 24 hours in Vegas and a large window air conditioner for 2075 years.

(A super-sized) Things We Love

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

collage23

In honor of the Talkies this Sunday, this week’s Things We Love is all about the Super Bowl.

Debbie loves Super Bowl ads with animals in them – I am a sucker for any type of TV spot with an animal in it.  And the Super Bowl never disappoints. Word has it that Anhauser Busch may dedicate 3 of its 9 spots to the Clydesdales. Good move AB. And I’m sure Pedigree’s new 1st time Bowl spot won’t disappoint either. Dogs rule!

Holly loves SuperBowlTalkies.com – I may be a little biased, but the website Talk launched this week promoting the 2nd Annual Talkies Awards is pretty awesome. It is a one-stop-shop for everything related to Super Bowl commercials including YouTube videos, blog postings, polls and even a live chat where every opinion matters.

Kelly loves
e*Trade baby’s latest commercial – He made his debut spitting up in front of almost 100 million people during last year’s Super Bowl, “underestimated the creepiness” of a clown he hired with extra cash from his e*Trade profits and organizes cuddle battles with “Bad Girl” via his blackberry.  This year the lovable e*Trade baby and his pals are back with “outtakes” that didn’t make the cut for his latest commercial.  Love him or hate him, the ads are hilarious and have been hugely successful.  Check out his latest commercial!

Kirsty loves hashtags – To archive our Super Bowl Talkies chatting, we’re adding “#superbowltalkies” tags to the end of each of our tweets. You can see our Twitter thread by visiting the Hashtags website or Twemes.com.

Shawn loves Food Network’s enthusiasm for the Super Bowl – Lets face it Super Bowl Sunday and food go hand in hand. Everything I watched this past week had to do with the upcoming Super Bowl. Top Chef had the “Top Chef Bowl” complete with sponsors such as Quaker Oats. Biggest Loser had a segment on healthy alternative during the Super Bowl. The Hass Avocado Board has been running great commercials on how to pick and prepare avocados. The most recent shows how to prepare a guacamole dip that looks like a football field, complete with sour cream yard lines and cherry tomatoes as players. Yum!

Susan loves Monster.com’s Director of Fandemonium contest – This great stunt from the online career finder will give one fan the job of a lifetime. At the two-minute warning prior to halftime in this Sunday’s big game, viewers will learn how one lucky fan can win the chance to earn the “Best job in the NFL” complete with a $100,000 signing bonus.
