AARP demonstrates how a contest can generate visibility

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

I received the attached video via email from a friend.

AARP hosted a U@50 video contest on YouTube in August 2007 and I just got this email today. Gives you insight on the longevity of ideas and video on the web.

The contest gave people between the ages of 18 and 30 the chance to submit short videos on the subject of what they expect their lives to be like at age 50. The goal of the U@50 Challenge was to encourage intergenerational dialogue enabling young people to speak their minds and give AARP insight into their views. More than 50 videos were submitted from across the country and from these; the five top videos were selected by a panel of judges. This was the second place winner. Fabulous.

Great Clips Promo is a Cut Above

Friday, September 11th, 2009

images-1Tom and Kathleen Barber, owners of the Wilmington area Great Clips franchise, are celebrating the opening of their 14th Great Clips salon by offering $3.99 haircuts from September 12-18. Wow! I can’t even buy lunch for $3.99.

Their creative — and generous — Grand Opening promotion couldn’t come at a better time. All of us are pinching pennies during this economic downturn (I’m in PR — it hurts to call it a recession.) So saving a few bucks on essentials like a good haircut is a welcome gift from two business people who have proven their generosity to the Wilmington community again and again. And the Great Clips employees get into the generosity act too. In addition to providing stylish haircuts, staffers often volunteer time to raise funds for local charities like the New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Women and Children’s Hospital and Locks of Love.

If you need a good haircut, check out the new Great Clips at 348 South College Road. No appointment is necessary – just walk in. The salon is located in the University Centre Shopping Center next to Payless. Hours are Monday thru Friday 9:00 am - 9:00 pm; Saturday 8:00 am – 6:00 pm; Sunday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Now take the money you saved and donate it to your favorite local charity. One good deed deserves another!

Things We Love 5/27

Debbie loves Three Cups of Tea – This book is about Greg Mortenson and his quest to build schools in remote villages in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Here, Mortenson discovers that business relationships proceed slowly and only after many cups of butter tea. Perhaps Talk should incorporate tea service into all our new client presentations.

Jennifer loves children –  This coming from a woman who didn’t realize she wanted to become a mother, until she became one.  Over the weekend, I tried to focus on my son’s way of thinking.  As a working mom, I often get caught up in the things that “need to be done” aka the laundry, dishes, cooking, cleaning, bill-paying, etc.  Instead, I went with my 3 1/2 year old’s idea of weekend plans.  This included watching his Spiderman movie, building a tower with Mega-Blocks, swimming in a 74 degree pool, replacing batteries in his remote control cars (again), breaking out the coloring books with new crayons, and going to the park (twice).  I must admit, it was a very pleasant weekend.  My goal now is to spend time in this mindset more often.  The next time I’m asked to play instead of washing the dishes, I’ll try not to hesitate in taking out the blocks!

Nathan loves the iPhone – I realize how geeky this will make me, but I love my iPhone because it kept me connected to the real world as I was on a men’s retreat this past weekend. The retreat entailed camping, fish, building fires, and all the other great stuff that happens while camping. I must say, I had lots of fun, but it was also nice to be able to text my fiance, respond to necessary e-mails, and read news off of my google reader through my iPhone. Oh, on a better note, it was also awesome to use one of the iPhone’s astronomy applications to find constellations. The iPhone is an awesome tool, no matter what you’re doing. As they say… there’s an app for that.

Susan loves the Best RAWR Contest – The hilarious website icanhascheezburger.com launched a promotion for the upcoming Will Ferrell movie, Land Of The Lost. While I’m not a Will Ferrell fan, I follow LOL cats on Twitter and have the website feed included in my iGoogle account for my daily cat humor. The contest asks people to submit photos of their cat giving its best roar face. So far, the submissions are hysterical.

Things We Love 4/29

Debbie loves great customer service – One positive outcome of the recession may be a return to southern hospitality and good, old fashioned customer service. In today’s economy, few have the luxury to take their job for granted. The result? Service providers seem to be trying a little harder to keep customers happy. So smile and remember the customer is always right, even when they aren’t.

Jennifer loves helpful news stories – I saw an interesting segment on Dateline the other night.  The story was about people who had unclaimed money or property that was rightfully theirs.  Their tearful joy prompted me to get online and find out if I might have money owed to me that I was unaware of.  Unfortunately, nothing came up under my name.  You can read about this and check out a few different search vehicles for yourself at msnbc.com.

Kirsty loves People’s Voice Webby Awards – Have your say about the very best of the Net by voting online.

Nathan loves Facebook – For all the hype that Twitter is receiving, and it is a great service, I still like Facebook more. The content and conversations that are shared there are of a much higher value than on Twitter. Not to mention Facebook Connect, like Kirsty mentioned last week. It’s only a matter of time until Facebook figures out how to open up some of its more “private” data (like mini-feeds and wall posts) to outside sources. That’s when Facebook will really become an invaluable asset to companies. Plus I always enjoy catching a good fish with some buddies using Fish Wrangler.

Shawn loves crayons – Where would I be if I hadn’t had Crayons as part of my childhood? I remember how excited I was when I finally got a 64 pack with the built in sharpener. Such a big responsibility. I took care of my crayons. Never breaking them. Carefully peeling the fuzzy labels away to prevent rough edges. Rotating them in my hand as I used them so I didn’t wear away one side more than the other. I didn’t just color inside the lines. I took crayons to a whole new level spending hours on just one page. Mixing layers and layers of colors with lots of shading. I would use a butter knife to scrape away unwanted color or use my little fingernail to chip away wax giving the illusion of highlights. As you can see I wasn’t your normal kid coloring with Crayons. Colour Lover’s post on “120 Crayon Names, Color Codes and Fun Facts” brought all those memories back to me with a little more. There are fun facts, photos, Crayon inspired color palettes, Hex values and RGB equivalents for all my favorite Crayola colors.
Susan loves 1-800-Flowers.com’s Mother’s Day contest – The flower giant’s latest promotion asks entrants to go to Spotlightamom.com and write a short personal story about a mother-figure who has touched their lives. Then people can go online, read the entries and easily share their favorite stories on various social networks. Now there’s a company that knows how to tug on the heartstrings and conquer the Internet at the same time.
