Ten memorable event locales

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

One of the best ways to increase interest in and attendance of an event is to choose an event venue out of the ordinary. Choosing a new and interesting venue can make a significant impact on an annual event that over the years has become somewhat monotonous. So scrap the traditional hotel ballroom and consider the following options:

theeventproducer

• Aquarium
• Planetarium
• Sports stadium
• Boat, yacht or ferry
• Art gallery
• Museum
• Historic home or mansion
• Barn
• Botanical Gardens
• Theatre

These non-traditional venues provide many rich visual elements that could save you money on décor or can be tied to your theme.  Not only can you carry out the purpose of your event, but you will also give your guests a unique experience that they will remember and reflect back on for years to come.

Things We Love 4/1

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Debbie loves Chuck, the cute nerdy (not) guy that comes on NBC every Monday at 8:00 p.m. and makes me laugh out loud for an hour –  Zachary Levi stars as Chuck and he’s constantly getting in and out of close calls with super secret spy pal/love interest Sarah. I rarely get this attached to TV characters, but this is one of the few programs that I schedule my evening around. I’ve become a fan on Facebook and I’ve checked out their website a time or two. I usually post something about the show on Twitter or Facebook before or after tuning in. Sigh. I have a TV crush. Sorry dear.

Holly loves parents on Facebook – I know it sounds a little crazy, but I honestly love that my parents and their friends are starting to hop on the Facebook train. My Facebook profile has become such a personal, important component of my life over the last four years, and it’s nice that now my parents are able to take part in it. I no longer have to describe in detail the events I went to or the pictures I took, because all of that is for their viewing pleasure on my page. I’m excited we are learning how to use social media to stay connected as a family - I just hope they keep the stalking to a minimum.

Kelly loves the Wilmington Azalea Festival.  By far the best party every year in the South, the Azalea Festival is a five-day celebration of local artwork, tours of amazing gardens, rich history and southern culture.  With concerts, fairs and pageantry, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.  I first attended the Azalea Festival shortly after moving to this beautiful coastal town five years ago and I have not missed one yet!

Kirsty lovesLiving Social” is social cataloging for Books, Movies, TV Shows, Albums, Video Games, Beer, Restaurants and more. Its “Pick Five” is also the hottest trend on Facebook. The site touts itself as the the most comprehensive interest-based online community, helping more than 7.5 million users catalogue their interests, seamlessly integrating with Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, hi5, and Orkut. That’s for sure. Facebook friends across the nation have been bonding over the top five movies they grew up on, the top five albums of all time and the top five TV shows they’ve seen every episode of.

Nathan loves delicious – No, not tasty snacks, though he does love those, too, but what is considered a social bookmarking site. In other words, in the same way you can “bookmark” a page in your browser for viewing later, with delicious you can bookmark it online, allowing you to access it from anywhere that has an internet connection. What’s more, you can also share all of your bookmarks easily with your friends! For example, check out what Nathan has bookmarked recently.

Susan loves Clever design – Some people go through life plotting out stories based on random actions they see. Some notice smells wherever they go. Others see designs and patterns in even the most innocuous settings.  And then I see pictures like this, where the latter of those types saw something and took the time to make it a reality simply because they could, and I just sit in awe a few minutes.

Super Bowl cutbacks extend to special events

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

super-bowl-logo6

It turns out the Super Bowl pre-parties just aren’t that super. In an effort to tighten purse strings, some of the most popular promotional events are being scaled back or simply cutback. Here’s a rundown:

Sports Illustrated: Off

Coming off a year when publisher Time, Inc. cut six percent of its 10,200 employees and faced restructuring costs upwards of $125 million, putting on a Super Bowl party doesn’t seem like the highest priority.

Playboy: Off

Time magazine called this party the “Vanity Fair Oscar Party” of Super Bowl parties. Tickets sell for $2,000. But the magazine is wisely favoring the relaunch of Playboy.com in February over the popular party with Hef-ty price tag.

Lingerie Bowl: Off

This is more of an issue of location, location, location, than economics. The “Lingerie Football Committee” could not get permits to stage the event in Pasco County, Fla.

Maxim: On for now

One source described the party as “hanging on by a spaghetti strap.” Attendance for the bash was cut in half, but the party is still expected to go off with 1,000 of Tampa’s most beautiful people in attendance.

ESPN the Magazine: On

Arguably the most exclusive event after Maxim’s, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is home to this party, hosted by unlikely trio Kevin Dillon (Entourage), Jimmy Johnson (NASCAR) and Nick Lachey (recording artist).

Leather and Laces: On

This annual event will be hosted by Jenny McCarty, Carmen Electra and Kim Kardashian this year and promises lots of celebrities and athletes in attendance.

Seemingly recession proof, there will be far more celebrity hosted parties - most notably, Kevin Costner’s will benefit a Tampa Bay Buccaneers charitable foundation. Former NY Giants superpstar Michael Strahan will co-host and T-Pain and Sean “Diddy” Combs will perform.

Happy Birthday Penguin

Monday, August 25th, 2008

The Carolina Penguin (106.7 FM) just celebrated its fifth year by hosting a concert at the newly renovated amphitheater at Greenfield Lake Park. While their ice sculpture didn’t quite make it through the hot summer evening, the music was pretty cool. The 900-seat venue, which recently had a $1.2M makeover, was packed with Tift Merritt fans. In fact, the heavily advertised concert sold out. Even though the event had a few hiccups – the original opening act, Teddy Thompson, had to cancel at the last minute – the crowd didn’t seem to mind. And his replacement, Chatham County Line, put on a fine performance of “gather-‘round-the-microphone bluegrass”. All in all, it was a great evening. Happy Birthday Penguin!

History in the Water

Monday, August 11th, 2008

The Olympics.  The most anticipated worldwide event where the best athletes in the universe step it up and display awe-inspiring talent and athleticism, breaking world records by hundredths of a second, while the rest of the world watches them make history.  And make history is exactly what the U.S. mens 400 meter freestyle relay team did last night. (I still get goosebumps, just thinking about it).

I admit I’ve been caught up –along with the rest of America-in all the press coverage over Michael Phelps’ quest to become the first Olympian to win eight gold medals in a single Games, so, imagine my surprise –no, disbelief-as I watched his teammate, anchor swimmer Jason Lezak, make what might have been the greatest comeback swim in Olympic history last night.  Lezak, a three-time Olympian, was half a body length behind France’s Alain Bernard, an almost impossible distance to bridge, let alone overcome, in the last 50 meters of the race. But, determination for the gold overcame as Lezak gained inch by powerful inch. With the crowd roaring in the background, Lezak finished first literally by the skin of his teeth.  Thanks to Lezak, Phelps won his second gold.

This is what the Olympics is all about: watching people with extraordinary talent, strength and skill do what we ordinary people could only dream of.  These are the events that movies are based on, the moments that will be remembered for a lifetime.  Michael Phelps may be the first Olympian to win eight golds, but Jason Lezak was the shining star of last night’s events.

The Comeback Kid

Monday, July 28th, 2008

With the start of the summer Olympics ready to kick off in Beijing, there is one event in particular that I am anxiously awaiting: Dara Torres ’ unprecedented fifth Olympic return to the swimming pool.  A former competitive athlete myself, I am much more likely to root for the underdog in most sporting events, however, Dara Torres is anything but an underdog.

Torres is garnering tons of media attention as the first ever American swimmer to compete in five Olympics, and one of the oldest competitors to set foot in the pool.  At 41 years old, she is competing against – and beating – athletes half her age and has twice broken her own record in the 50 meter freestyle, most recently, twenty six years after she first set it at fifteen years old (also fifteen months after the birth of her daughter).

Since her Olympic debut in 1984, she has won nine Olympic medals, including four golds.  She won five medals alone in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, an unbelievable feat for any Olympian, not to mention one who happened to be the oldest member of her team at that time, at thirty-three years old.

Dara is proof positive that age truly is just a number and that your dreams don’t stop because you’ve hit a certain age. What do I admire most about her, besides her six-pack abs and super toned physique?  Her attitude that anything is achievable…it just depends on how badly you really want it.
