Tweet away Congress

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

It’s no secret that President Obama embraced technology during his presidential campaign. It is also no secret that his use of technology gave him an advantage over his competition by connecting him to a younger, untapped generation of voters. In an attempt to gain back some of that support, the GOP has joined the micro-blogging site, Twitter.

Until October 2008, it was illegal for Congress members to use third-party sites, such as Twitter. But all that changed when the Sunlight Foundation campaigned for the right to use social media as a way to keep the public informed. Congressman John Culberson R-Texas has been known to take his BlackBerry with him to the House floor. He told ABCNews.com “If we are conducting the public’s business, it is our obligation as representatives to shine sunlight in every nook and cranny of that meeting.” Who knew Twitter could be so socially responsible?

Super Bowl cutbacks extend to special events

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

super-bowl-logo6

It turns out the Super Bowl pre-parties just aren’t that super. In an effort to tighten purse strings, some of the most popular promotional events are being scaled back or simply cutback. Here’s a rundown:

Sports Illustrated: Off

Coming off a year when publisher Time, Inc. cut six percent of its 10,200 employees and faced restructuring costs upwards of $125 million, putting on a Super Bowl party doesn’t seem like the highest priority.

Playboy: Off

Time magazine called this party the “Vanity Fair Oscar Party” of Super Bowl parties. Tickets sell for $2,000. But the magazine is wisely favoring the relaunch of Playboy.com in February over the popular party with Hef-ty price tag.

Lingerie Bowl: Off

This is more of an issue of location, location, location, than economics. The “Lingerie Football Committee” could not get permits to stage the event in Pasco County, Fla.

Maxim: On for now

One source described the party as “hanging on by a spaghetti strap.” Attendance for the bash was cut in half, but the party is still expected to go off with 1,000 of Tampa’s most beautiful people in attendance.

ESPN the Magazine: On

Arguably the most exclusive event after Maxim’s, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is home to this party, hosted by unlikely trio Kevin Dillon (Entourage), Jimmy Johnson (NASCAR) and Nick Lachey (recording artist).

Leather and Laces: On

This annual event will be hosted by Jenny McCarty, Carmen Electra and Kim Kardashian this year and promises lots of celebrities and athletes in attendance.

Seemingly recession proof, there will be far more celebrity hosted parties - most notably, Kevin Costner’s will benefit a Tampa Bay Buccaneers charitable foundation. Former NY Giants superpstar Michael Strahan will co-host and T-Pain and Sean “Diddy” Combs will perform.

Obama added to Sunday’s pre-game show

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

super-bowl-logo8NBC News’ Matt Lauer has scored perhaps the biggest interview of his career.  On Sunday, Lauer will chat with President Obama in his first live interview from the White House since his inauguration on January 20.  The interview will be broadcast on Sunday during the Super Bowl pre-game show with additional footage airing the following day on Today.

Almost 38 million viewers tuned in to watch Obama’s inauguration last week, so if only a fraction of them tune in on Sunday, it is sure to be a success.

The Drysdale Sports Center at the Country Club of Landfall beats the recession blues and scores media coverage

Monday, January 26th, 2009

The Country Club of Landfall’s fitness coordinator Nikki Pierce was featured on the front page of the Wilmington Star News Saturday, suggesting that exercise was the best way to relieve chronic stress, boost energy and lower healthcare costs during the current recession. As a way to improve members’ physical and emotional wellbeing, the Club launched their “Commit to be Fit” fitness program where groups of ten share the cost of a personal trainer to reach their fitness goals.  To learn more about the Club and available memberships, visit www.CountryClubofLandfall.com and check out the article online at Country Club of Landfall.

Wag the Dog: Top ways to watch the Inauguration today

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

camdenusa

The historical 2008 election gave way to unprecedented uses of social media in campaigning. So it’s no surprise that Barach Obama’s inauguration may be the most accessible and most watched of any in American history. With a little more than half an hour until our President swears in, here are my top 3 favorite ways to connect.

1. CNN.com Live with Facebook. Visit CNN.com to watch the events live and connect with your Facebook friends to chat.

2. Wilmington StarNewsOnline.com Special Coverage. The Wilmington, N.C. paper is live blogging and tweeting from the scene (@burkespeaker). Best local coverage far and away.

3. Obamanaugural on Gawker.com. More snark than substance, but if you have a few sarcastic bones in your body, follow their ongoing coverage.

A TV spot you want to cuddle up to

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

It’s always nice to see when a company connects with the audience on a personal level. Though this should be the goal of every marketing initiative, often times, the advertising is off the mark. But Iams’ Home For The Holidays spots, which show eager new-pet owners who struggle to make an instant connection, are right on target.

Both spots remind us all of a time when we were desperate to play with a new pet that wanted nothing more than to get the lay of the land – alone. And the message “The real reward in adopting a pet, is when the pet adopts you” just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Bravo Iams!

Go Daddy Scores PR for Superbowl Promo

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Go Daddy landed some great PR today on Fox News. The CEO was on to promote Go Daddy’s latest Superbowl hijinx. Go Daddy has created two Superbowl spots - each racy of course. They want you to go online to vote for which of the spots you’d like to see during the big game. Go to www.godaddy.com to vote. Good PR move Go Daddy. The spot featured here is the one that was censored when Go Daddy first came on the scene.
