Where does design inspiration come from?

Friday, January 9th, 2009

I think you can be visually inspired by just about anything you just need to know where to look. There are countless online web sites and blogs, many of which just show other designer’s work. Not to copy from but to be inspired by. Adobe’s Kuler is one of several online sites that allows you to create and share color themes. You can also play around with Pantone chips to develop color themes. Old fashioned? Yes. Fun? Always. As it turns out, today I had to look no further than the corner of my desk. Shown above are a few random items that I had stacked up on the corner of my desk. One of my many “find a home for me” piles. The stack included a book named Dewey that my boss had lent to me, the latest stock photography catalog from Veer and the second edition of Designing Brand Identity with a few post-it notes as page markers. I kept glancing over and then realized what a great color palette the stack created. Below is my interpretation.

Test Your Superbowl Commercial Knowledge

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Once again we are weeks away from Super Bowl Sunday. In honor of the 2nd Annual Talkies, I have been sharpening my skills by taking a few online Super Bowl commercial trivia tests. Lets just say I did not pass with flying colors. Thankfully, I have a few weeks of hardcore training so I will be ready for the big day. Take a few of the tests yourself to see how well you’ve been paying attention.   Test #1 Test #2 Test #3

Campbell Soup vs. American Family Association

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

The American Family Association (AFA) has recently taken issue with Campbell Soup/ Swanson for a print ad aimed at gays and lesbians. On their website the AFA is urging consumers to contact Campbell to demand that they stop “pushing the gay agenda” and to “remain nuetral in the cultural war.” Here is the kicker, the ad was specifically created to run in The Advocate, a hugely successful Gay and Lesbian magazine. Is this really “pushing the gay agenda”? Known for being all American and very conservative, Campbell Soup is nonetheless standing fast against the AFA. They have made no apologies for the ad series and have taken a very strong stance on the criticism. ” Our position on this is pretty straightforward, inclusion and diversity play an important role in our business, and that fact is reflected in our maketing plan. For more than a century, people from all walks of life have enjoyed Campbell’s products, and we will continue to try to communicate in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them.” said company rep Anthony Sanzio.  “Our plans for the Swanson brand include additional placements in The Advocate.” Misti Graham, president of the LGBT-specific agency MDG Marketing Group, said the gay and lesbian marketing targets an estimated $690 billion in buying power. “The LGBT audience is the third-largest in the country behind African-Americans and Hispanics, and we’re very in tune with which brands embrace the community and whose messaging and imaging reflects that.” I think this is all…. well….. Mmm, Mmm Good!

The NFL has an “Official Wing Sponsor”

Friday, December 19th, 2008

The countdown towards the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl XLIII has definitely begun. None other than Kentucky Fried Chicken has signed on as the “Official Wing Sponsor.” This is their first ever sponsorship with the NFL which will allow them the rights to show the NFL shield and Super Bowl logos on their buckets of wings, promotional drink cups as well as other packaging. Not to mention TV spots, in store POP displays and the all mighty online presence. I think I know what I am bringing to the 2nd annual Talkies party.

The Obama logos you didn’t see

Monday, December 15th, 2008

I have worked on a lot of logo projects through the years. After a logo is finally chosen it is sometimes astounding to look back at all the various logos that didn’t. Often times people will look at a logo and think “its so simple…. I could have done that” but if they look at everything that went into making “simple” look that simple, they may be singing a different tune. Here is a great and probably abbreviated look at the Obama logo process.

Happy Cows make Great Commercials

Friday, December 5th, 2008

The California Milk Advisory Board has raised the bar even higher with their “Real California Milk Happy Cow Audition Site.” For years they have kept us entertained with clever commercials featuring animated cows in every possible scenario. Their efforts are a great example of choosing one strong concept and sticking with it. Happy Cows make Great Cheese. Since the happiest cows are apparently in California, they are now featuring audition tapes as commercial spots. So far, we have seen auditions from Alicia, Jenn, Shelby and my favorite, Kirsten. Check out their website and vote for your favorites. It looks like we may be seeing several more auditions in the near future.

Who wants a Mistletoe Makeover?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Sephora has recently launched a great virtual makeover site called Mistletoe Makeover. You upload your own headshot, and do a few little tweaks here and there, then its time for the makeover. You get four different makeup styles to choose from. Each of them have clever names such as “O, Tannen Babe” or “Santa’s Little Temptress.”  What next? You get to send it out as a holiday greeting. You choose what to say and whether you want a wink or kiss in your animation. It’s pretty darn cute. If you choose to go further you get to see all the product Sephora has used in your makeover and you can even receive free products. What a great way to show product. Of course I won’t be buying any products or requesting free samples, but I have sent the link to countless people.  Job well done Sephora!

Our Work Speaks for Itself

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Over the last few years we were so busy “Talking” that we neglected our own web site’s portfolio page. It never really looked that great. It was a little shameful. But finally we rallied the troops, rolled up our sleeves and went tree by tree through the forest of our past work. Ten plus years of past work and it was a bit painful. As we all know a great online portfolio is not only expected by clients, but a critical marketing tool. We had countless conversations about how the page would function, what we did and didn’t want and why. How it would be navigated. How would the work be presented. I think our final solution is right on target. Finally our work really can speak for itself, giving us more time to Talk!

Good Clean Advertising

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Here is a great example of thinking outside the box. Tide detergent created an outdoor poster that literally demonstrated it’s long-lasting whiteness. The poster was created on a very busy road, covered in cotton, specific areas were treated with Tide. A few weeks later a clothes line of brilliant white clothing was revealed.
