Good night and good luck

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Puzzled by the new faces behind the anchor desks in your local television market? Sunday’s New York Times explained that a generation of veteran anchors, whose hefty salaries “seem out of sync with the reality of budgets,” are being bought out and laid of. This trend is alarming to viewers -  more than half of the population watches local news regularly, according to the Pew Research Center for People and the Press, while only 34 percent read a newspaper each day and 29 percent watch a network evening newscast.

But the Television Bureau of Advertising is expecting a 7 to 11 percent decrease in commercial revenue next year, and stations are adamant that the cost cutting has to start somewhere. But is the anchor desk the right place to start?

TV news, like its print counterpart, has long planned how to move its format to the Web to take advantage of a medium that’s still growing in popularity. The challenge is that viewers can pick and choose their own news on Web casts, which in some cases may render the anchor “superfluous.”

The reality is, as Tom Petner, editor of the TV industry newsletter Shop Talk said in the Times’ article, “The industry is moving from star players to more of a team sport.” But, this could be dangerous for some station owners who have newcasts, which represent 40 percent of the station’s revenue. Many veteran anchors in large markets carry the station’s entire brand solely on their shoulders. When you replace them with someone new and younger you not only risk losing viewers, but you also risk losing the insight that only decades of news reporting can bring.

This only goes to show that TV news must continue to reinvent itself if it wants to continue to thrive and make money for stations. And veteran anchors have an incredible opportnity to be a part of the solution, instead of a victim of the fallout.

Country Club of Landfall’s oyster roast cures turkey hangovers, scores media coverage

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

The Country Club of Landfall’s Executive Chef Kevin O’Connell was featured on Saturday evening’s WWAY News Channel 3 broadcast, suggesting that fresh, local seafood may help cure your Thanksgiving turkey hangover. The Club held a “Turkey Hangover” Oyster Roast for its members on Saturday and Talk secured some media coverage for the event. The Country Club of Landfall, which sources more than 90 percent of its seafood from Carolina coast - from Beaufort to Southport - is a strong advocate for the local seafood industry. To learn more about the Club and available memberships visit www.CountryClubofLandfall.com, and in the meantime watch Chef Kevin’s appearance and don’t forget to “Digg It” if you like it!

Luxury brands look to navigate the market

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

You can’t avoid it. The rhetoric that “frugal is the new black” or “recession is the new green,” is everywhere and causing some problems for luxury brands. Their audience, previously unscathed by the financial downturn, is now being affected by the marketing speak, to the point that it has reduced spending in the last few months, according to the New York Times.

The article mentions that luxury spending dropped 20.1% in October and ad pages in luxury magazines dropped 22% year over year for the December issues. So how do these brands plan to ride out the storm?

  • Girard-Perregaux watches will reduce its advertising budget in the United States by 20% for the first quarter.
  • Brioni, the Italian fashion line, will cut its advertising by 10 to 15 percent in U.S. publications.
  • General Motors is postponing the introduction of the Buick LaCrosse until January, Ford is holding off redesigning its Volvo S60 sedan and XC90 sports-utility vehicle and Chrysler has stopped production on its Aspen hybrid sports-utility vehicle.
  • Orient-Express Hotels canceled new buildings in Miami; Cartagena, Spain; Zambia; and Puglia, Italy.
  • Donald Trump is postponing a $300 million development in Philadelphia.
  • Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company has halted projects in Florida, Vancouver and California.

While it is wise for these brands to exercise caution in these times of economic uncertainty, we would caution them against falling of the radars of their affluent market altogether. Because whereas the Ritz, Trump and the Big 3 automakers are pulling back, other brands will pair their vision with a strategic marketing message to take their customers. It was only a matter of time before the luxury market was affected by the state of the economy and those that planned for this will emerge stronger and better for it in the end.

Sarah Palin fights back on Today Show

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

As Governor Palin begins to make her post-election media rounds, she is finally starting to come into her own. In her latest interview with Matt Lauer of the Today Show, she’s not exactly polished - she describes wanting to “brag him [McCain] up,” in an introduction to his concession speech that she was ultimately prohibited from making. However, she clearly has the passion to emphatically set the record straight on America’s perception of her and how she may have been a little chewed up by the national political machine. For the first time since she became the Republican VP candidate, we saw the Palin who is so charismatic and engaging in public, be charismatic and engaging in an interview.

She also exercised a smart move by inviting Matt Lauer into her home to observe her cooking and interacting with her family. She looks natural, comfortable and happy back in her role as America’s favorite hockey mom. If she keeps this up, she’ll be a viable contender to replace her state’s disgraced senator and maybe even a prospect for 2012. She should be advised to remain quiet after this media blitz to avoid the overexposure that arguably cast a shadow over the McCain campaign. But, if she does intend to remain in the spotlight, the RNC should be kind enough to give her back her hairstylist.

Ad of the Day: From the Bush League to the Ivy League

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Post election, we’re seeing an overabundance of political themed ads, and we get terribly amused when we see an ad like this that gets it so wrong. CollegeClickTV.com is praising our new president elect and his wife for their Ivy League educations. Someone forgot to do their research, which would have revealed that Bush is a Yale and Harvard grad. Kind of gives new meaning to their tag line, “Education is the Power to Change.”
